a way meditation helps

Fantastic, glad to hear it. I hope to be getting back to yoga soon myself.

On meditation: I think one of the biggest benefits of meditation is not that it is relaxing, but that it helps us to avoid emotional over-reaction.

For those of us in a state of "Adrenal Fatigue" where the slightest concern popping up in our minds causes us bursts of adrenaline, certain meditative practices can help greatly. Mindfulness meditation is a form where you practice letting go of thoughts and judgement and focus on sensory experience. This training in identifying when a thought arrives, being aware of your own thinking, and controlling how you think is like exercise for your mind. It helps you develop "muscles" and "reflex speed" in handling your reactions.

The the more you practice, the more likely you can avoid adrenaline shocks that accompany emotional thoughts. Just got on the road, but realize you left your wallet/purse at home? Adrenal burst. But less likely if you've been meditating. Walking down the street and remember the argument from last night? Adrenal burst. But maybe not, if you've been meditating.

Also, being in a greater state of equanimity — emotional calm, composure under stress — helps us to avoid making situations worse, especially relationship situations. Our emotions urge us to respond, often times with defensiveness or resentment, and so we often create new problems and certainly don't solve the old ones. If we continue to respond like robots to having our buttons pushed, we won't break out of the patterns and cycles of frustration we are in. Instead, being in a state of calm, being able to receive insults and to consider the degree of their validity, being able to see more clearly, being able to think ahead a couple steps instead of blurting out emotional responses, these things help us make our lives better and less stressful. These things are fostered by mindfulness meditation.
