Petroleum Jelly?

Has anyone on here actually tried using petroleum jelly, eg Vaseline, long term? I'm trying a new experiment with Vaseline Lip Therapy in Cherry flavor. It might help, it might not, but I don't understand the negativity towards petroleum jelly on this forum. If you accept fruit acids and steroid creams for experimentation on your lips, why are you so afraid to try plain old Vaseline with the same dedication?
