Sounds like a fungal infection involving more than simply candida. Probably aspergillus, mucor, and/or other more exotic molds. Likely that some low (or high) level strain of hyphal candida in the GI encouraged the colonization. But the others were initially inhaled.

The color is likely bacterial in nature - released/co-existing in the biofilm which contains the mold.

Classic toxic mold infection.
