I also led a terrible lifestyle before my crash. To say I ate 2-3 servings of vegetables a week is probably being generous. But then again, look at how many people live terrible lifestyles for decades and don't wind up suffering like we do. Which leads me to believe that metal has got to have something to do with it for many of us.
I should add that while I did feel better physically in a general sense, some symptoms did in fact get worse in the days immediately after the filling removal (e.g., I became extremely ADD, BMs seemed to get worse, etc.). My brain was feeling so schizo in those days, I knew that it had to be mercury that was at the root of it because I had never felt that way before.
However, I started chelating with DMSA 3 days after the last fillings were removed. And that is when my symptoms steadily began decreasing--mental state became calmer, joint and body pains became less, etc.
I am using the Cutler protocol with DMSA (currently using 50mg every 2 hours, 7 days on and 7 days off), and I have recently added alpha lipoic acid together with the DMSA (25mg).
