Re: Interesting video especially the part on viruses and cance

One thing about the lecture is that there is a lot of misleading information.

For example, they claim that kombucha is dangerous because it causes lactic acidosis, but they say they do not know why.  Actually the reason is found in the medical journals in which they state that these cases were from the consumption of excessive quantities of kombucha.  Using their same reasoning we can also conclude that drinking water is unhealthy.

Then they talk about stevia converting to steviol.  But the toxicity was found in rats, and we are not rats.  What is toxic to other animals is not necessarily toxic to humans.  Chocolate and grapes can be deadly to dogs, yet we can eat them.

Then they claim that peanut butter is healthy, yet they apparently overlooked the high level of cancer causing aflatoxins associated with peanut butter.

In their claim about all groups needing to take statins except for vegetarians again this is misleading.  First of all statins are not the compounds that can lower cholesterol.  Secondly, the liver synthesizes most of the body's cholesterol.  Dietary cholesterol is not as much of a factor.  There are forms of high cholesterol that are considered hereditary, which I personally think is questionable.  On the other hand vegetarians often eat raw foods such as flax seed and cruciferous vegetables that can suppress the thyroid, and guess what one of the main contributors of high cholesterol is?  Yep, hypothyroidism.

They also claim that vegetarians have a lower risk of cancers.  But they cite a study of British vegetarians.  But the study only looks at some cancers, not all cancers.  Since they were looking at British vegetarians though then the intake of tea must also be considered since black tea is considered a risk factor for some cancers due to the polyphenols that they say earlier in the lecture you do not want to neutralize with milk or other substances.  For example this study from Britain:

And tea is also high in fluoride, which can further suppress the thyroid raising cholesterol.

Another great example of how the speaker is being very misleading is that he talks about organochlorines (OCs) in meat and claims that vegetarians shown to have OCs must have picked them up from breast feeding early on in life.  I guess he missed all the studies showing OCs in fruits and vegetables such as these:

http://www.springerlink.com/content/75u0414852342489/

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/10466104

In fact there are numerous studies on the subject that can be readily found.

He also mentions DDT and claims that it is going to be around for centuries.  Actually the xenoestrogen DDT only survives about 100 years in the soil.  But the most important point is that they claim about how how meat is full of DDT.  Have they stopped to think about the fact that since the animals we eat are generally vegetarian themselves that they must have gotten the DDT from eating the plants!  Here is some more on that:

http://www.atsdr.cdc.gov/phs/phs.asp?id=79&tid=20

"The largest fraction of DDT in a person's diet comes from meat, poultry, dairy products, and fish, including the consumption of sport fish. Leafy vegetables generally contain more DDT than other vegetables, possibly because DDT in the air is deposited on the leaves. "

"DDT has been found in both root and leafy vegetables. "

The part about cancer viruses was interesting, but overall the entire lecture is full of misleading information and really should be taken with a grain of vegetarian, DDT free salt.
