Re: Sick and tired

I'm looking for encouragement to keep going and/or advice on breaking my fast.

The last time I fasted 7 days and I felt great days 4-7. I am currently on day 17 of what I am hoping is a 40 day fast. I have not felt great a single day of this fast. I have been so tired!

I haven't seen many posts where the faster is still working, cooking 2-3 meals a day for family, running kids to sporting & church events, etc. We have been snowed in for about half of my 17 days, so I haven't had to get out as much, but I have been sleeping what seems an unreasonable amount of time.

Hi Tammy,

It sounds like you're in a tough position because of your many responsibilities.  Fasting is well known to often make us feel weak or tired.  Ideally we are in a position to just lay down for most of a fast for this and other reasons.  If it's not possible to ease up on your responsibilities while you fast and you are too tired to carry on, i would agree with Alb that a juice diet might be better suited to you.

I have been considering breaking my fast, but am nervous about doing it while sick based on what I've read.

You are right that it's not a good idea to break the fast mid-illness and i'm sure it is something you would regret.  Your body will heal itself fastest while fasting, so if i was in your shoes i would at least wait until you are feeling better before breaking and perhaps transitioning to juice.

I will also feel terrible about not even making it to the halfway mark of my goal.

Is this not the least of your worries? :)  You have to do what is best given your circumstances.  Out of curiousity if i may ask, what led you to a 40 day goal?

I don't know if it has any bearing, but I am considerably overweight and have lost 25 lbs. I was hoping for more and I am afraid of how much of it I will gain back when I start eating again.

You can see my other post in this thread regarding my beliefs about temporary weight loss in a fast.  The good news is that you will burn a fairly substantial amount of actual fat and with the right exercise and nutritional program to follow, you can continue to consistently burn more until you reach your goal.

I have continued taking my synthroid, birth control, multi-vitamin and fish oil. I tried a couple of days without them this week and slept even more.

I have read that it is necessary to continue taking thyroid medication while fasting (one of the few medications where this is true).  Birth control is tricky and i don't know anything about that, but it strongly recommended among experts to forego the multi-vitamin and fish oil while on water-only.

Being even more tired or weak speaks of being more deeply in rest (a more optimal fast) and thus more deeply in detox and is not something i would be concerned about.

All the best,

Mighty Sun Tzu
