Re: Sick and tired

As for regain I think rule of thumb is about 5 to 10 pounds is water weight lost and maybe [weight] in digestive tract.

5-10 pounds of temporary loss in a 40 day fast is fantastically conservative.  I keep seeing you repeat it, but where did you come up with such a figure and/or what are you basing this on?   In my 3 long fasts i gained back about 20-25 pounds in each of them over about 3 weeks before the weight leveled off... in the most recent one going from 139-164 (or it might have been 138-163).  This was eating nutrient dense foods with no added salt, predominately (but not exclusively) vegetables and fruits... and i was exercising consistently.

I prefer to let people know what is likely to happen realistically so they are prepared for it and don't become disheartened once it does.  Not to say that everybody would gain back this much since we all are different, but as i have directly experienced, gaining back 20-25 pounds in 3 weeks before the weight levels off is certainly one possibility. To gain back only 5 pounds after 40 days of fasting would fall into the category of "anomaly" unless the person was eating too little (not enough nutrients, perhaps starvationally) which would keep the temporary losses from replenishing themselves to their natural levels.

You hear much higher numbers sometimes but they dont' really seem to make sense.

Do you believe losing 40 pounds of fat in 40 days (as you believe you have) makes more sense?  Have you considered how many calories a fasting body with a slowed metabolism would need to be burning each day to make this happen?

Why is it typical to lose about 2 pounds per day in the beginning and a half pound per day towards the end?  It's because when we were losing 2 pounds much of it was temporary loss.  By the time we are losing only a half pound the preponderance of the temporary water that we were going to lose has already been lost and we are seeing what is actually predominately fat loss at that point.

The ever diminishing metabolic rate is an important factor, though minor by comparison, but according to Dr. Shelton this is about 25-40% lower by the end of a long fast than it was in the beginning.  To take an example for somebody with a fairly high metabolism, this would mean if we were burning 2800 calories on say day 3 (about 2500 in fat) we would be burning about 5/7 of a pound in fat or .71 pounds.  By day 40 we would be burning about 1700 calories in fat which is about 1/2 pound.  Most people and especially if they are smaller would have a substantially lower metabolism (starting perhaps at 1400-2500) and their fat losses would thus be proportionately lower.   We really have to be aware of how much of our loss was likely from actual fat which unlike temporary water and intestinal content losses has the potential to be enduring.
