I too have Hashimoto's.
One of the questions you really want to ask the MD is whether or not you are still making antibodies against your own thyroid. In my opinion, and the opinion of my naturopath, if you are making antibodies against your own thyroid, then I need the Synthroid (or Armour, or whatever your choice of med is.) In the meantime, I can work on correcting the diet, get healthy, support the immune system. Them check back with the antibody situation. Once I get my immune system to stop making antibodies to my own thyroid, then I will stop taking the Synthroid.
