Good For You Jackie!

How much of each herb you want to order would depend on how much/long you're going to be using the tincture.  For instance, I will be taking Echinacea daily for the rest of my life so that is one of the herbs I order a pound of each time so I always have it on hand.  But, like with the Valerian that you've only tested a sample size, you might want to order the 4 or 8 oz. to make a small amount of tincture to take for a while to see if it works for you.  If it does work you can always order more but if it doesn't then you won't have all that herb that you won't use.  See what I mean?

If you store the dried herbs in an airtight container in a cool dark place, they'll be good for a year or longer but I'd take them out of the plastic bags they come in and store them in say, a glass canning jar if you don't have a cool dark place to put them.

Tinctures are like any other "liqueur" (alcohol imbued with fruits, berries or herbs), they should stay 'fresh' forever :) (From a Uny post).

As for the Echinacea and where to buy it, that would depend on how much you want to buy.  P/B doesn't sell any herb in less than a pound but M/R does.  Uny always opts for the fresh Purpurea if it's available, you'll have to call P/B to see if they've got fresh ready to ship.  I remember Uny telling me that the Purpurea root is very tough, so tough that she has to take a high end meat cleaver or HUGE knife and pound on it to get it cut up.  Uny says that once the fresh root has tinctured for a few days it's softened up enough that she can macerate it in her VitaMix but I'm not so sure it would be for a blender.  That's a question Uny will have to answer.

I wasn't aware that M/R had the fresh Purpurea, I just looked and couldn't find it?

Uny's St. John's Wort tincture is made from what she calls the herb and flower so I'd say you'll have to wait until one of the suppliers get their stock back.

None of our suppliers carry the Lady's Slipper so I don't know what to tell you on that one, sorry.

You should try any you want to try, even if they call for more than one herb, it's easy and it's fun!

Blessings,

Willow
