Re: Can too much oil cause a GERD attack?
I used to work in a high-stress job, and had really bad acid reflux. I haven't worked there in two years, and my GERD had finally calmed down. I could pretty much eat anything I wanted. Suddenly I have developed reflux to badly that my esophagus is swollen almost shut, and burned all the way up my throat, just like before. I'm going to have to go on a water diet for a few days, because I can't eat or drink. I also ate some potato chips the other day, which I hardly ever do, but they never bothered me before.
I'm thinking maybe the coconut oil and the added fat from the potato chips may have caused this? I can't think of anything else, because that is the only change in my diet, which is mostly raw foods and whole grains.
I didn't eat much fat before I started taking the 3 tbsp. of coconut oil daily.
The oil should not cause this. High oil intake can cause gallbladder attacks though.
As for the throat a simple remedy to soothe this and to promote healing is to make a tea by boiling slippery elm or marshmallow root with some licorice root for 15-20 minutes. Use 1 1/2 cups of water per teaspoon of herb to keep the cooling tea from gelling up upon cooling. When the tea has cooled sip on the tea throughout the day to coat the throat with a soothing mucilage and to reduce the inflammation.
