Well they thought for many years (decades) that blastocystis was non-pathogenic .... I think some of that thinking was due to them not understanding that there are/were sub-types of blasto that are non-pathogenic - perhaps there are subtypes of e hartmanni that are pathogenic.

According to that link, the patient was treated with Flagyl (Metrodiazole) and recovered. May be worth considering.
