Re: Generalized Anxiety Disorder

What would you recommend to calm someone who has Generalized Anxiety Disorder or GAD? I was thinking something like Kava Kava or Gutu kola might be good. Only thing with Kava Kava is that I read it wasn't good to use on a daily or consistent basis.

It is safe.  The warning comes from a false belief that it is toxic to the liver.  This was from a case where a pharmaceutical company bought up the waste the Fijian people were throwing away, ground it up and sold it as kava.  The problem is that what they were throwing away was the toxic part of the plant.

I heard it was more of a once or twice a week only kind of herb to use for anxiety, nervousness, etc or when things got really bad, which wouldn't be good for someone like me who has constant anxiety and nervousness most of the day.

My first recommendation is nettle leaf.  Anxiety can occur from a lactate build up or from an over release of epinephrine and lack of acetylcholine.  Nettle leaf reduces lactate levels and supports the adrenals preventing excess epinephrine release.  It is best taken 3 times daily on an empty stomach and is safe for daily and long term use.  Nettle leaf also supports many other areas of the body including the kidneys, liver, thyroid, etc.

Ashwagandha also calms the mind by stimulating the brain's GABA receptors and it supports the adrenals.

The amino acid glycine also works great when taken on an empty stomach.  It is a calming neurotransmitter inhibitor.

Lecithin or choline bitartrate can be used to elevate acetylcholine levels.

I know my poor sleep has a lot to do with my GAD. My mind isn't rested or rejuvenated after sleep. I tend to have insomnia but have no problem sleeping 7 or 8 hours once I do fall asleep, it's just not a very relaxed, restful or restorative sleep. Sleep disturbances I guess. It's gotten to the point where I'm having cognitive problems (focus and concentration, ADD type symptoms) due to poor unrested sleep. I saw in a post that you recommend kava, scullcap, passion flower, and catnip for sleep. What's your favorite or what would you recommend I try first?

Kava is the most effective out of these.  Scullcap would be my second choice.
