From below: OJ Fasting/Barefoot protocol

Continued from this thread below: http://curezone.com/forums/am.asp?i=1651667

Greetings of health, 125618 (and EVERYONE! :)

Well, well, well...(sigh & a smile) - I find it's time to make a post that I've known I'd likely have to make long before I opened this forum.  On the one hand, I've been dreading it - on the other hand, I feel/know this information is SO essential that I welcome the opportunity.  What's the topic?  MH/Barefoot's teachings, particularly Orange Juice Fasting.

Preface:  This forum is founded on the teachings and healing protocols of 3 time-honored healers - Dr. Christopher, Dr. Schulze and Dr. Gerson...and any other healer that falls into the parameters of their works.  To my knowledge, the core protocols of these great healers have cured more people of the most insidious of "incurable diseases" than any other healers to ever live.   Over 10 years of researching, I have compared the protocols of dozens of healers, finding their 'core' protocols & concepts to be extremely similar (but each having various 'quirks').  I've done my best to throw out the concepts that were not similar and found that the fundamental concepts of these three basically 'cover it all' (other than the introduction and recolonization of various microbiota).  This protocol is solidly based on protocols of those healers that have proven to be consistently successful tens of thousands of times, has stood the 'test of time', and (to my knowledge) has virtually no potential to cause harm.   Any slight changes or alterations that I've made in their protocols, definitely match the core concepts of each, and have been made ONLY because of the new and harsher challenges we face than when these great healers were in clinical practice.

The information in this post: ~!~ Schulze GEM! How to choose a protocol/teacher/book MUST READ  is absolutely essential for anyone and everyone that considers 'taking advice' from anyone about their health (on the internet or otherwise).  If you haven't read it, please read it before responding to any post in this thread (as far as responding with "protocol thoughts") - thanks.
Onward...

The following is written with absolutely NO malice or anger, NO intent of disrespect, NO intent of judging anyone's intent or their character, and absolutely NOTHING but my sincerest of desire for people to be able to read & contemplate what I have found. If anyone would like to challenge what I've found and concluded, I have absolutely no problem with that...IF they provide solid evidence to back up their opinion and/or provide information I am lacking. (I simply do not have time to waste debating opinions).  If I offend someone? Well, sometimes saying/revealing the truth is offensive to those that don't see, understand or believe the truth (especially to those that don't want to, or those that have a financial, emotional or egoic investment in their beliefs).  If I am incorrect in ANY way, I apologize and ask forgiveness for my error/s now...and ask (again & always) for evidence of my being incorrect - because that is the only way I can learn and correct my own errors.

****************************

I.  I believe that Orange Juice Fasting (as suggested by MH and otherwise) has potential for harm.  And I also believe that much of the information in many of MH's "books" (and many of the theories & opinions he teaches on his forum) have potential for harm.

II.  I also believe that whether or not it is comfortable for me to say it (or popular, or "politically correct") that I have the responsibility to share what I have researched and found to be true...especially if it affects someone's health or well-being.  If I am wrong, I can apologize and retract my words (or people can think poorly of me).  If I am correct, I will have potentially saved someone many weeks, months or years of ill health or death (and/or the wasting of hundreds/thousands of dollars).

III.  I believe that everyone reading this, should not believe anything I say simply because *I* say it.  Whenever anyone is given conflicting advice or information, they should use that information as a springboard into their OWN research, so that they can come to a conclusion that inspires confidence & healing for themselves.

--Of all the time-honored, successful healers (that consistently cured ALL manner of 'incurable diseases') that utilized juice fasting, to my knowledge none of them utilized only Orange Juice fasting. There is at least three 'old healers' I know of (Dr. William Howard Hay, Dr. Leon A. Wilcox & Dr. Frank McCoy) that seem to be attributed to recommending extended OJ fasting, but I have never been able to find anything but a few various blurbs regarding the protocols of Wilcox, and from this book of Dr. McCoy's ("The Fast Way to Health http://tinyurl.com/37sjljy ) we clearly see that McCoy utilized all manner of fasting, not only orange juice...and recommended that orange juice should be taken with raw milk). There is more information on Dr. Hay below.

***Out of the Gerson/Christopher/Schulze trio, only Christopher utilized mono-fasting (rotating one week carrot, one apple, one grape).  Dr. Christopher added MANY various herbs, oils and oil massages to ensure the nutritional content was optimal.

***This reason alone is enough for me to not suggest or utilize OJ fasting

*******************

--A quick note on "fasting" - whether it be water-fasting, something like the Master Cleanse (water, lemon juice, cayenne & maple syrup, using cathartic herbs and/or salt-water flushing to ensure elimination) or other random, nutritionally incomplete fasts...going off solid food is always beneficial to the body.  The basic reasons: 1) it takes VAST amounts of energy and resources for our body to process, digest, assimilate and eliminate 'food' - and when fasting, this energy can be used by the body for detoxifying and restoring itself. 2)  Whenever this energy is made available to the body, it rapidly starts pulling toxins from our tissues and into the bloodstream for neutralization, detoxification and removal.  However there is one MAJOR issue that must be addressed (that was NOT a major issue decades ago (back when the MC was created and when many other water-fasting protocols were developed by the Hygienists - and the prior decades/centuries)...and that is the MASSIVE amount of poisons & metals that are now stored within our tissues and how to contend with their rapid release while getting all the benefits of fasting...SAFELY.  How? 1) ensure 2-3 daily bowel movements without causing harm or stress to the body  2) utilize natural substances like bentonite clay and/or activated charcoal that pull (adsorb) poisons and metals from the bloodstream to themselves within the digestive tract, so they can be eliminated in the bowel movements (rather than overburdening the kidneys & liver, which are already so overburdened they couldn't eliminate the toxins in the first place). 3) when juice-fasting, ensure the body has ample well-balanced vital nutrition.

To do this, Dr. Gerson utilized coffee enemas to ensure bowel activity, strengthen/improve peristalsis, decongest the liver AND cleanse the bloodstream.  Dr. Christopher (having patients with not nearly the toxic load of Gerson or Schulze) utilized only cathartic herbs to keep the bowels moving, but utilized 'blood cleansing herbs', liver/kidney herbs, and oils to support the liver.  Dr. Schulze added the IF#2 (a combination of various fibers, intestinal healing herbs and bentonite/charcoal to adsorb toxins), while adding actual liver flushing and high enemas, as well as utilizing cathartic and cleansing/supporting herbs. All three gave the body large amounts of extremely balanced, easily assimilated nutrition via juices.

-- (from original post/quoting Barefoot): 63000 people have done this and had great success. -- What evidence do we have of this?  I have "Book 1" and "108" and I've seen the '63,000 thing' in both "books", but with absolutely no proof or references.  Anyone can write a book and claim anything they want to claim.  MH's forum has been around 6 years - if he's referring to 'personal experience' from people on his forum, that would be 875 people per month, and we can clearly see that's not the case.  There's no mention of OJ Fasting anywhere on the net that shows anything substantial or validated of any healer utilizing OJ fasting (and only a few handfuls of personal stories, except on MH's forum).  Of course, there could have been a healer (or healers) that had 63,000 successes with this protocol with virtually nothing on the internet about it...but I have a very difficult time 'buying that' (and I certainly wouldn't bet my health on it).

Okay, let's see what I can find real quick-like on his forum - from MH's post (6 years ago) here: http://curezone.org/forums/fm.asp?i=712588

>>>What is an orange juice fast? It was a cure all about 100-70 years ago. I have a version where I mix the best of 2 doctor's clinic methods, <<<

1) Who are these two doctors (and the others) that he references, upon which he claims his protocol is based?

2) And why doesn't he clearly state them in his books (or on his forum) and freely make their information available? (perhaps there are some that don't need an answer to this second question to determine 'truth in healing'. But quite frankly I've "had it up to here" with doctor-gods and healing-gurus expecting me/others to believe everything they say, 'just because they say it'...especially those that are rude and/or condescending if I ask for sources or clarification. This always sends up 'red warning flags' for me, and I've learned over the years to pay attention to those flags).

If someone totally without clinical experience of any kind is combining protocols of old healers and recommending them, I want to know who these 'old healers' are (so that I can research everything about them and their success/failures, methodologies, how these protocols work for today's challenges and how they stack up against today's knowledge of how our bodies actually work)...and I expect that information to be readily available from the person suggesting I take their advise.I want to know all this well before I utilize this 'combined protocol' on myself or certainly before recommend it to someone whose health is compromised.  I would advise everyone to adopt that same criteria for themselves - and to always hold me (and others giving advise) to that standard.

To find more information I've done searches on both of MH's books ("Book One" and "108") for the words "doctor" and "dr." - here are the names I've come up with: Dr. Hulda Clark; Dr. John Christopher; Dr. Morton Walker; Doctor Loomis; Dr. Chas. Mayo; Dr. Percy R. Howe; Dr. Elmer V. McCollum; Dr. George W. Crile; Dr. John Harvey Kellogg; Dr. Robert McCarrison; Dr. Alexis Carrel; Dr. W. B. Cannon; Dr. Oliver Wendell Holmes; Dr. Leonard Williams; Dr. Tanner; Dr. Hay, M.D. (I assume Dr. William Howard Hay).

Other than Dr. Clark & Christopher, almost all of these references are random quotes by one of them about nutrition in general or the evils of the medical establishment.  But I cannot find 'validation of' or 'references to' any particular doctor and OJ fasting in those two books.
However, I did find several blurbs (without any type of validating references) on the 'net that Dr. Hay cured 63,000 people in his clinic.  If you to Google, using this search criteria: 63000 OR 63,000 + Dr. Hay OR Dr. William Howard Hay, you will get these results (I think you'll find the results very enlightening): http://tinyurl.com/2u5rjey

So now we know Barefoot (and a few that have read his forum & books) say that Dr. Hay cured 63,000 (with comments and references about OJ fasting). Is there somewhere or something that will prove or validate this statement? 'Could be - but with everything I've researched over 10 years (and with what I've learned while compiling this post), I'm not going to waste my time looking for it. Why? Because the information in Dr. Hay's book reveals he could not have been the "63,000 cures" and that he didn't use OJ fasting as suggested by Barefoot.

You can read Dr. Hays' book entitled "Health Via Food" here:http://curezone.com/upload/_N_Forums/Natural_Heali/HayDiet.pdf  (published first in 1929) and here is his basic diet plan (and more information): http://chestofbooks.com/health/nutrition/Health-via-Food/Normal-Diet-Part-2.html

A quick review of the book above shows that Dr. Hay did start some/all (?) of his patients with the 3-day OJ/Epsom Salts routine, but after that switched to various fruit and vegetable juices, then to fruit & vegetable salads, and ultimately to his 'food combining' diet (above) - focusing on fresh raw fruits & vegetables.  After the 3 day ES "purge" he ensured bowel movements with cool water enemas nightly (3 quarts of water - which would actually be a high, cleansing enema), until 3 bms daily were achieved naturally.  The cleansing enemas were used for 'as long as necessary'. His continuing diet (after the water-fasting/juice-fasting stage), added raw produce and ultimately allowed meat, cheese, and all other foods (if "combined correctly"), but didn't allow white/processed sugar or flour, stimulants, coffee, smoking, etc.

As far as OJ fasting for longer than this 3 days - here a few quotes from his book:

--"...by a reasonably long fast, either total or one confined to the use of a moderate amount of fruit juices, for perhaps one month, or, if the juices are used rather freely, then a period of six weeks to two months..."  Obviously he's not referring to straight OJ fasting when he says fruit juices.

--"...Those whose vitality is fast ebbing away...we do not feed even largely of the raw foods in vital form, but use vegetable broths, with also some raw fresh fruit juices and the expressed juices of raw succulent vegetables until the system becomes accustomed to this change."  Again, obviously not an OJ fast.

--There are countless other/similar references, none of which indicate OJ fasting, and all of which show that extended OJ fasting was not part of his protocol (the .pdf file does not allow me to copy/paste, or I'd share more).

--Dr. Hay did advocate and utilize extended water fasting (using small bites of fruit or sips of juice only to relieve "fasting mouth"). He mentions: During a protracted fast, or after long periods of the raw natural foods, there will occur a surprising array of symptoms that accompany Nature's unloading process. And he elaborates further on the various symptoms. This is a VERY important issue for us all - as these toxins & symptoms are exponentially worse almost 100 years after the book was written (with significant potential for harm to our already overburdened body & organs of elimination).

In the Fasting Chapter Dr. Hay shares that we should prepare for a fast by eliminating one meal daily, then two, etc - never just jump into it from our normal eating habits - switching to vegetables & fruits while eliminating meals.  He recommends a two-week timeframe for this preparation.
Dr. Hay was in clinical practice as an allopathic MD for 16 years before 'seeing the light' (due to his own illness & subsequent recovery via diet change, cleansing & restoring his colon via deep irrigation (which he calls "colon toilette" :)

By doing some 'number crunching' we can clearly see it's possible he treated 63,000 patients in his entire lifetime/career, but certainly HIGHLY unlikely after 16 years in allopathic medicine (after which he authored books and opened The East Aurora Sun and Diet Sanatorium...which was meant to be 'follow up care' for those on his program), it's pretty-much impossible that he treated 63,000 people via natural healing & fasting.  According one of Barefoots's study guides, Dr. Hay treated people naturally 23 years:: "Can you imagine Dr. Hay explaining this method to over 63,000 patients over a 23 year period! No wonder he was able to write his little book during a few week while on vacation."

Number crunching here: so if Dr. Hay worked 5 days a week (with no vacations or three-day weekends), that would mean he treated more than 10 people a day.

So no, actually, I can not imagine that a doctor in the 1920's/30's would (or could) treat over 10 people per day in an 8-10 hour workday....especially not if he took several weeks of vacation yearly (which we know he did at least once to write a book)...because that would make the number closer to 12-13 people daily.

Besides, even if Dr. Hay did treat 63,000 people holistically, it obviously wasn't with OJ fasting.

My conclusion on this -- if there was a doctor that treated 63,000 people with extended OJ fasting, it certainly & obviously was not Dr. Hay...and it's highly unlikely that Dr. Hay treated 63,000 people naturally. Certainly NO doctor or healer has every utilized Barefoot's "combined protocol" in clinical practice and his "combination" leaves out or adds things that make his protocol/s substantially different from the original protocols. Hence (unless I've totally missed an "oj fasting doctor" in my 10 years of research), it is simply impossible that the OJ fasting protocol that MH has compiled & recommends was utilized on 63,000 people successfully.

*******************************************

Is there any potential for harm in OJ Fasting? Yes. Here's just one:
Google search: "tooth enamel" + "citrus juice": http://tinyurl.com/37vqjwc

Is there any potential for harm in ingesting Epsom Salts (magnesium sulfate)? Yes.  (I've always wanted to compile this information, so now is a great time to do it and 'get it in print'):

--Because magnesium is removed from the body solely by the kidneys, if the kidneys are compromised some level of hypermagnesemia (too much magnesium) is possible (it's actually possible with NO "kidney compromise, if the amount ingestest is high).  Hypermagnesemia is an electrolyte imbalance of abnormally high levels of magnesium - symptoms are weakness, nausea, diaphoresis (sweating), facial flushing, hypotension (low blood pressure), impaired breathing, depressed reflexes, hypothermia (lowered body temperature), vomiting, hypocalcemia (too little calcium) which can cause reduced heart rate, cardiac arrhythmia, or at it's total extreme, asystole (flat-lining, no heartbeat).

Who has "kidney compromise" at varying levels? - it is typical reported:
--blood flow through the kidneys decreases by 10% per decade after age 30
--by age 75, the kidneys weigh 10-25% less than when we were young
--by age 80, the kidneys' ability to filter waste has decreased by 50%

So, that means unless we've done a thorough kidney cleanse & regular maintenance cleansing (as well as "full body upkeep"), and we're under 30 and in great health, we all have some level of kidney compromise. So we're all going to experience some level of hypomagnesemia when taking Epsom Salts (or any other magnesium supplement).

These symptoms will disappear based on 'how much was taken' and the kidneys ability to remove the magnesium and rebalance the electrolytes.
From the site ehealthme.com (premium membership is required for this in-depth level of searching) - we have a compilation from the actual adverse reports made to the FDA regarding Epsom Salts below.  Since very few layman have any idea that one can & should file an 'adverse effect report' to the FDA, it is likely the vast majority of these were reported by medical professionals:

On Jul, 19, 2010: 6,642 people who reported to have side effects when using Magnesium Sulfate are studied

'Sound like the side-effects of a pharmaceutical drug? Yes it does. Minerals isolated away from their natural phytochemicals and co-factors are NOT natural to the body; ingested in 'therapeutic amounts' they ALWAYS cause some level of stress or imbalance (which is virtually impossible to do with natural food).

Those that are allopathically trained and then 'see the light' (Dr. Hays, Dr. Gerson, etc) - have a propensity for using these substances and thinking of them as "natural". It is for this reason, I haven't included Gerson's handful of unnatural supplements when I combined the protocols. I have no idea what Barefoot's reasoning is for recommending the use of Epsom Salts when he claims his teachings are "natural cures"

Other issues with Epsom Salts:

Because they pull water from the bloodstream and into the intestinal tract:
--this further imbalances electrolytes
--it causes dehydration
--it causes diarrhea, which furthers dehydration.
--if the intestinal tract is compromised, this harsh diarrhea can worsen the compromise.

First physician, do no harm.

********************************************************************************************

When reading Barefoot's books, I found the two quotes below:
From 108:  "I agree with 98% of the Dr. Christopher methods and education..."
From Book 1 "I mix the old doctor’s methods, Dr. Christopher, & Dr. Clark methods of using oranges to cure all diseases and restoring the red blood cells."

Since this post has taken so long to compile/post, I will address these two statements (hopefully) in a few days.  I will say now that I know of MANY areas (far more than 2%) where Barefoot does not 'agree' with Dr. Christropher and recommends against what Dr. Christopher taught us.  You can be sure, Willowley and I will be elaborating further (with past Barefoot posts, links and data directlyfrom Dr. Christopher's original writings).

-- Thinks & thoughts upon researching and utilizing protocols from "old healers" --

There is absolutely NO doubt that many of the successful healers throughout history were truly enlightened, gifted and most of them were truly selfless. The one thing that seems to be a common thread is that they recognized dis-ease in the body for what it is (an unnatural state) and they knew that to return the body to a natural state, we need to be devoted & aggressive in our fasting, diet changes and therapies.

However, many (MANY) times, while we can clearly see that their methodologies worked, we can also now see the reason they worked isn't always what they believed or claimed. For example, here's what Dr. Christopher says about Echinacea:

Echinacea is a very effective alterative and blood-purifier, and it is a powerful and stimulating antiseptic and antiputrefactive agent. It is very valuable for correcting autoinfection, wherein elimination is imperfect and the tissues and fluids have altered and developed septic or putrefactive action with resultant systemal devitalization and adynamia (weakness). Its stimulating antiseptic and anti-putrefactive action on external surfaces is comforting; and in arresting pus-formation, it eliminates the disagreeable odors of foul surfaces and fetid discharges. It is an excellent healing agent wherever tissue decay is imminent or taking place, repair power is poor, and where there are unhealthy or sanious (bloody-tinged) discharges. Echinacea is a good appetizer and greatly improves digestion and is useful in strumous (goitrous, scrofulous) conditions. It relieves non-venomous bites and stings, and the Sioux Indians used the freshly-scraped root as a successful antidote for snake bites and hydrophobia.

But we know now that many of Echinacea's benefits are because echinacea stimulates AND modulates the immune system (amongst it's myriad of benefits, some we likely may never understand 'scientifically).  Echinacea does work, but not necessarily for the reason/s Dr. Christopher thought it did.

Dr. Hay (and apparently Barefoot) believe that we should reduce or eliminate the production of stomach acid, but (of course) the body does NOT naturally produce substances that harm itself. In fact, we know that without ample quantities of stomach acid the foods we eat are not broken down properly, which contributes greatly to congestion and impaction throughout the intestines, lack of assimilation of nutrients and many diseases (caused by the overgrowth of pathogens which feed upon this decaying matter). AND we now know that stomach acid is our 'first line of defense' against food-born pathogens!

Because Dr. Hay utilized fasting, diet change, elimination of toxic foods, and deep colon cleansing (and other natural protocols, like nude sunbathing)...that restored the body so effectively before utilizing his 'food combining diet', it would appear (to someone not researching fully), that his food combining and 'no stomach acid' theory was beneficial.

But what is more likely is that once the colon was cleansed and restored (eliminating the constant feed of poisons and putrefying acidic substances, hence ensuring adequate assimilation of non-toxic live nutrition) AND the body & organs had reset & restored themselves (and toxins in the tissues had been removed) via the extended fasting, juices and raw foods, there is/was never a need for any contrived & unnatural 'food combining' process, nor was there ever a need to reduce or eliminate stomach acid.

So we must all be EXTREMELY careful when utilizing these 'old healers' as a guideline for creating protocols for ourselves and others. We must do our best to understand why these protocols worked; what challenges we have today that may have the potential to 'cause harm' if we utilize them "as written", and thoroughly research (and compare against other time-honored protocols) to find the factual reasons for the their success.

And maybe most importantly, we must welcome the criticism & challenges that lead to the purging & elimination of incorrect information and the increase of correct information (no matter HOW difficult that is for our egos, our pride, or in some cases, a financial bottom line).

Thank you #125618, for posting and giving me an opportunity to share my thoughts.

Healthiest of blessings,

Unyquity

ok, I was told to say this on the forum for the beneficial education.

The OJ Fast was recommended to me by MH the Barefoot Herbalist. 63000 people have done this and had great success. He has a Book 1 that he wrote on his website and it has some great info in there but its a little far out there sometimes when I read. So I asked UNY some advice. So I am going to copy and paste the protocol for forum education

---BEGIN QUOTE from BOOK 1 of MH
The Orange Juice Way

Fresh squeeze 1 pint of orange juice each morning and filter out the pulp.
The first 3 mornings, mix 1 tablespoon of Epsom Salts in a glass of (home
made) distilled water and drink only the first 3 days.
You can drink as much water as needed during the day. If your week and
feeble, you can also drink 1 pint of fresh made carrot juice each day.
You must submit to the proper cool enema each night before bed.
You must read and apply the food wisdom in this book (the book he wrote on his website) and after fasting for
14 days, return to an alkaline diet.
This diet means no breakfast and no lunch ideally.
For dinner you choose one preferred fresh fruit or berry and eat until your
satisfied.
You then remove this waste each morning and start new with the evening
meal.
This is the greatest method of obeying Nature we can all do, if we choose to
do it. The author knew we wouldn’t, so much of this education is in proper
combined foods that do not force the stomach to create acid and this diet also
allows the body to be doing an 18 hour fast everyday of your life.
In my opinion, if you add a parasite plan and liver flushing plan to this
information, you will have achieved becoming your own physician and
better! Your on your way to freedom.
Naturally all your past habits such as dental metals, etc. will be road
blocks, you will need to read many books to learn all the methods of
restoration, or just take a look at Nature, everything you do against
Nature will work against your great health. It is actually quite simple.

---END QUOTE

Hope this helps people in some way.
