Man is not as brutal as he was,frommy take on history. We read of cultures of the past where blood sports,of gladiators fighting to the death was appreciated by the masses. Slavery wasthe accepted practice. The slave was owned body and soul by his/her owner. We read of Sarah giving her maid to her husband as a surrogate mother. The same thing took place all over the world. WE read of John Newton, writer of the hymn "Amazing Grace" continuing 25 years after his epithany to carry on the trans-atlantic slave trade, with a clear conscience, which involved throwing his sick, 'cargo', in human beings overboard. We read of Martin Luther, father of the protestant revolution, and his prescription for the Jews. The abuse of the peasant classes in the industrial revolution.

Sure there is a lot of violence and brutality still, but society has evolved in conscience way beyond what the ancestors attained. Most of what some of the saints of old thought of as righteousness, would be condemned by even the most average society nowadays. A saint of old may have though ' Happy is the one who takes your babies and smashes them against the rocks!',Psalm 137:9. Today the most base human being knows better. A look at history supplies the answers!
PS: I said all of that to say that societies seem to evolve in mass. Their highest constructs, gods, give a clue to their state of evolution.
