Many men are oppressive toward women regardless of religion. Bullies always oppress those that are weaker than them, whether it be physically or socially. This is what you can see from the TSA in the airports in an increasing frequency, and police that think they are the final authority, abuse runs rampant and power corrupts. Men don't need Christian or Islamic beliefs to oppress women, it is practically second nature to many of them.
