The key here is "remains a week after the discontinuation"... there is no study that supports "permanent" colonization. Probably after one month or so all the probiotics you take will be out of your body.

Taking prebiotics such as rice and oat bran, apple pectin and FOS is a better option to increase good flora. You can take some probiotics at the same time for one or two months just to decrease the risk of some of the bad guys feeding also on this fibers.
