Why the liver thing?

a) dead fungi are toxic (see die-off reaction = herxheimer's for an illustration), and the liver's job is to remove toxins, so any effective antifungal is going to be A BIT hard on the liver
b) some antifungals, especially the old and cheap first-generation crap, are just plain old strongly toxic themselves. example: ketaconazole (MUCH less so fluconazole, almost not at all itraconazole).
