Iodine on skin versus orally?

I'm intrigued by the notes I keep seeing about people using Lugols on skin, and using Wombat's creams.

Is this something you are doing instead of taking it orally, or in addition to taking it orally? If in addition, does it affect the dosage?

How does the absorption compare, and does putting it on the skin affect the whole body or just local to where it is applied?

For someone like me who is REALLY nervous about the bromide detox, would it be reasonable to think of starting with a bit on my skin, before starting the oral dose?

Any and all comments appreciated...
