Re: epsom salts baths

is it true epsom salts are alkalizing?

I have to disagree with the alkalinizing claim. The pH of Epsom salts (magnesium sulfate) is actually slightly acidic, and it is used as an acidifier for soils. So it would very likely do the same thing in the body. The only way I can see it being alkalinizing is if it were to stimulate a bicarbonate release as lemon juice, which contains citric acid, will do.

I've been having epsom salts baths ever second day all year. I'm now concerned about my skin. I'm not using any oil as I kind of came to the conclusion that what my skin really wanted was water, plenty of water. Might be wrong.

You are right, dehydration is very hard on the skin.

But when I last had a long trip, which lasted a year, and I could only shower then, if I could, that was my main feeling, that my skin was incredibly thirsty. Anyway, back to the epsom salts, should I change then? if so what you suggest to put in the bath - something easy, possibly?

If you add enough salt, even sea salt, to a bath you can dehydrate the skin. Remember from chemistry that water will move from a level of higher purity to a level of lower purity.  When the salt concentration outside the cells exceeds the salt concentration inside the cells the water moves from the cells in to the bath water. This is why salt is used in detox baths. As the water moves from the cells in to the bath water the water carries dissolved toxins with it. This is also the reason it is important to drink plenty of water when doing these baths to prevent dehydration. So you can use the Epsom salts, but you need to keep water on hand and drink it frequently before, during and after the bath.
