Re: My water fast

"I am aware that the weight loss is most rapid in the beginning but I would expect to lose at least a pound a day."

Hi Socustomfitted,

Sodium causes water to be retained and in the first few days a water fast helps to eliminate a lot of sodium and in turn a lot of water.  I have always found that rapid weight loss dramatically slows after "about" 7 days because by then most of the water loss that will take place already has.  In looking at your weight chart, it seems to me that your slowed weight loss and your period coincide only by coincidence.   I am a male and i can show you a chart of my own that is day by day proportionately similar.   I might theorize (ie: guess ;)) that non-fasting weight gain surrounding the period is sodium retention and water retention based, factors which are neutralized in a fast... with no sodium being introduced, none can be horded.

At no point in the fast do i believe we are losing a pound per day in "real" and enduring loss. Based on many factors (starting weight, metabolism, stage of fast, level of exercise...)  i believe we would lose about .3 to .6 pounds of fat per day in a water fast.  These early days of high loss are highly water based and for the most part highly temporary.  A continually slowing metabolism in a fast contributes to the slowing loss, but is gradual and a much more minor factor.
