Instead of telling you to come back in six months when, presumably, the cavity will be big enough to fill, your dentist should have told to use xylitol and fluoride(see Zellies.com, Dr. Ellie Phillips' website about oral care). Topical fluoride (the basic ACT fluoride rinse, for example, not ACT restoring mouthwash) combined with xylitol will promote the healing of cavities.

Many people here are opposed to fluoride, however there are plenty of studies to prove that fluoride is effective in preventing and healing cavities. The key is in the proper use of fluoride; too much of a good thing is not always a good thing.
