I have also tried many things that are supposed to 'balance' hormones and either doesn't help at all or worsens the symptoms of pms.
I also have had heavy periods my entire life. I was just in perfect health and then got my first period and pms and my life slowly went downhill from there.
This part you posted:"I'm also on the fence about whether a menstraul period is really for the purpose of cleansing, and whether an extra heavy one means the body is dumping toxins. As someone who has bled like crazy for all my adult life, I don't feel any less toxic as a result."
I have to agree that having a heavy period is not cleaning out the body. For one, I felt great before a period was ever introduced to me. And I got my uteral ablasion which burned the lining of my uterus so I don't get heavy periods and I feel much more clean not getting them.
I also find it strange reading that a period is not supposed to have clotting. Isn't the clotting just the lining sloughing off the wall of the uterus?
