Re: what does it take?
To be a leader necessarily requires followers.
Absent followers, one can only lead themselves.
For anyone to follow anyone else as a leader, there must be at least one specified goal that is attempted to be accomplished.
Then, the leader must be viewed by the followers as being the one most suitable to do the leading for that particular task. Typically those with the most experience in a leadership role are most suited, but a good leader must also be resourceful, i.e. have the means to achieve the goal, including reputation, connections, knowledge, tact, daring, imagination, style, etc., if they are to make the transition from being merely a leader and to being a successful leader for the task. Those resources can take many shapes and forms and will determine success or failure, but ultimately the leader's power derives from the minds of the followers, and the power they each individually contribute to the leader to do the leading. If the people withdraw the power they gave, the leader becomes powerless.
