Re: Editorial Of Sorts-What Is Support?

anyajb69,
a very perceptive and insightful post. Thank you.

I agree with you for the most part that visitors to the forum arrive here for a variety of reasons, including ED's, weightloss, detox, health-improvement and so on, but it is extremely difficult, if not impossible, in making any distinctions as to the REAL reasons as to WHY they are really here, unless they are entirely honest and candid.
It is only on that basis that any advice (if any) can be given, and where most if not all responses are well-intentioned/meaningful and constructive.

BUT, whatever reason for their visit, it is usually for want of help and need in dealing with their particular health-problem/disorder, and as a "support forum" this is what we all do best.........offer support.

It would also be inappropriate, if not potentially damaging in offering a diagnosis based on the symptoms given, and where this should only be offered by a health-qualified professional; but more often than not, visitors arrive here with a diagnosis that has been predetermined by such personnel, and where any help from them has failed to materialize.
This being the main reason for the very existence of curezone.

As an example, one could say that I presently have an ED of sorts, after the very recent death of my Mother by eating very little, or having the stomach for it as I go through the experience of bereavement, and what I find is a devastating loss: I have lost weight as a result.
I know very little about ED's or even a desire to know anything, but these people need to be redirected to the proper channel of support in addressing their health problem. It is just a question of identifying this and persuading them.

The forum does seem to have evolved from a "health-perspective" into an "all-encompassing forum" including those wishing to lose weight in a repeated cycle of consecutive fasting/binging/eating; these members really need to be identified and directed through to the proper channels of support and help. But, where better to go than a forum that is viewed by many as offering expert advice in fasting safely? There are very few alternative venues: hence their arrival here.

Advice concerning any accurately determined and pre-existing health/disease condition is usually offered via the qualified and vastly experienced/expertise, from those who have gone before us in dealing with those very same diseases, and where success in dealing with them was the "norm" and NOT the exception.
Dubious health conditions that have not been accurately diagnosed previously by qualified personnel should be (and often are) redirected to an appropriate and qualified health adviser.

Some of the very best advisers I know of are non-credentialed and highly valued within their own sphere of specialty by their employers: one in computer science, and the other in the World of food/nutrition. They command and receive high salaries for their expertise over and above their credentialed colleagues.
There is just no substitute for knowledge and experience, whether credentialed or otherwise.

Within the health field (and as you should know) alternative health practitioners treat the body as a "whole" and not as individual parts/components, and where one that I know of described this as "the evils of specialty". I agree with that assessment.

My own experience within the health field spans a period of 30 plus years, and is also non-credentialed, but that is irrelevant in offering any advice within that area of knowledge.

I disagree with you that some of the avatars do in fact look decidedly healthy: except in the case of Hopinso, who could probably do with some improvement in the "looks" department. (No offence intended Hopinso).

There is no doubt that lifestyle changes (including diet) play a major part in achieving wellness and longevity, and where this has been promoted mainly by Mouseclick as relevant and essential prior to and post any fasting endeavors. This is offered via the credentialed experience of a Dr Fuhrman MD, and where this is a "one-size-fits-all" approach to healing and good health: judging by his testimonials, and which largely stems from the vast experience and endorsement of Natural Hygienists both past and present.

I don't believe for one moment that we have condemned western medicine outright, as they do excel in areas that alternatives do not: namely surgery/diagnostics and trauma, but they have failed miserably in the treatment/cure of chronic disease, and where symptom-management is their normal mode of practice, without addressing the underlying causes.

I think you will find that alternatives are a popular and growing industry because of the failure of Mainstream, and where the inclusion of some into "Integrative Medicine" is a reluctant concession by them in appeasing the populace, but will only be considered (for the time being) to be of fringe benefit.

Regards

Chrisb1.
