What this tells me is the skin has hypersensitivity and that serotonin is advantageous. Your stress relief techniques are most likely built around the release of serotonin. Its the feel good hormone, which opposes stress.
The keeping skin method on is difficult to function in normal society. You are right as it being the hardest thing to do regarding Exfoliative Cheilitis.
Why don't we look at EC like this;
The Body Clock is messed up. Stress kills Serotonin and this messes up your Body Clock, how your body works. Since you are doing stress relief techniques your Serotonin levels are increasing. Looking through the past of this forum. Alot of us crave carbohydrates, carbohydrates are directly related to the creation of serotonin.
Now just looking around the internet has alerted me a whole new aspect rather than just a physical problem.
OCD. Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. I don't want to make it seem like we are crazy but Exfoliative Cheilitis may be the hypersensitivity to this problem. I know i was obsessive with my lips and i still am to this day. Read this for example;
"I am 33 yr old female. I continously bite right side of my lower lip for years. Now skin of my lip became hard. Each time it is hard, I can not resist biting it again. I easily worry about things small, and big. But I don't bite my lips when I am anxious or worried only, I bite when I am happy too. Just the feeling of the skin makes me begin biting again. I have to remove that skin and make it smooth. But of course it is an endless cycle. I bite and pull the skin with my teeth, then skin tries to heal and renew itself, as it becomes hard in healing I bite and pull the kin again. No chance to heal. I am fed up with this habit. It looks so ugly. But I can not stop it. After readin many book I decided that it is just obsessive compulsive action happening regardless of however I feel. please suggest a homeopathic remedy. I appreciate any help.
This is an alternate route. Seeing as you have success, without medication is a very good sign. Meaning you can maintain it without medication. If you look into the Science of it, we'll find clues because you have been on this forum for a very long time.
Alot of OCD people do it but don't refer to it as Exfoliative Cheilitis, you never know some may be cured with a completely unconventional method.
But like you said, leaving the skin alone is incredibly hard for us with Jobs, School or any public places. And stress comes along with EC for everybody.
We aren't crazy but look into this http://www.skinpick.com/lip-picking
and find out the Science behind it and we can help all of us. The lips are needed for communication and in this world if you cant communicate you are alone.
