Re: Nutritarian Progression with the Vitamix
"Interesting, so the vitamix probably helps a lot to get onto a raw diet by making it easier to eat raw, then your taste buds adapt after a while and you can go further."
This is for sure. Much easier to drink a kale smoothie than to eat whole kale. Chewing each bite 1000 times can grow tedious :).
"But has that affected your ability to eat whole raw veg? Do you find you can now eat raw kale, for example, whereas before you couldn't?"
To be honest, it is all so new, i haven't even tried to eat raw kale or collards without pulverizing (or juicing) it.
"Presumably though you prefer the juices, most people with Vitamixes praise them."
I do really like having that 2nd stomach :).
Update: After creating this thread i had a collard green smoothie and had a hard time with it... meaning the taste of it made me keep wondering if it was going to make me sick. It didn't in this case, but i am hesitant to have another any time soon. Collards taste so good to me cooked and so questionable raw... there was a cumulative effect though it seems, it was quite a bit more "fine" yesterday and today it was bad.
Began to research whether certain foods as these are not really intended to eat raw. Perhaps Steve you know a lot more about this than i have uncovered in this short time. One thing i found in this limited research is that collards, kale, swiss chard and broccoli have some unfavorable compound (i lost the page and don't recall the name of it) that can irritate the intestines... and something about anti nutrients in raw form that prevents the assimilation of calcium. I'm not sure if that is still true when it is pulverized (cell walls broken via the vitamix) and i would think it's even less likely to be so when actually juiced (juicer), though it could be that even juiced, it's "healthier" cooked into a broth.
What to you guys think? :)
