Considering the whole bible is a manipulative tool and superstitious work of mythology and hypocrisy, I'd say the characters in it are likely just as fictional as are the events described within the bible. Jesus (trademark) doesn't bring people together, Jesus divides people. Jesus fills a void in people's lives of following a leader or "hero"... leaders which should be themselves or others currently alive who are able to actually actively lead and speak and revolt. The powers that be do not want "heroes" rising up to fight them, so they give the masses mythological characters to follow to pacify them and keep them in church on Sundays and fighting themselves instead of the revolutionary battle grounds fighting the powers/owners/lords that be. Jesus says that the bad guy is YOU! (or the devil), not your oppressor who people should be focused on.
Christianity is a recipe for keeping the masses dumbed down, obedient serfs, and keeping them asking for more of the same and dying for their enslavers. And christianity is designed to spread virally among the masses, unlike some other religions that are exclusive clubs designed to oppress others. People can't even agree on what race or religion Jesus was, there are countless denominations of christianity, and "Which race Jesus was" is yet another argument to keep the jesus myth alive and living through controversy.
Atheists get the most crap from society, which to me is a measure of just how brainwashed and indoctrinated the masses still are. It boggles my mind how in the year 2009 so many humans worship a santa claus, a super hero, a mythological story character who "walked on water" and "died for their sins".... Jesus is a pacifier. What would billions of people have done with their time and energy had they not given it to "Jesus"?
