you need a wide mouth jar in order to pull the culture (scoby) after brewing.
If it has a narrow mouth, I wouldn't use it.
I have had some trouble pulling a scoby out of a narrow mouthed gallon jar before (not a jug).
I had a Buddhist Monk give me a 2.5 gallon wide mouth jar that is near perfect for brewing larger batches of kombucha, (I need to get another one for rotation) otherwise, I use one gallon wide mouth jars.
