The French have many different cheeses, wines and breads. My French mother never let us eat croissants after 11am in the morning, its just not the done thing. Cheese is always consumed after your evening meal, with wine and fruit. As children we were allowed a half glass of red wine with our evening meal, people now would be horrified at this :). Children and the elderly were given the new wine, because its more acidic and the French believe that kids and oldies need more acid, especially when you are eating red meat. One thing I remember from my childhood is never eating breakfast cereals, I didn't even know they existed until we came back to Aus. This was when my problems with gluten started.
