Revenge of the pineapple

Ok so I'm eating a whole raw pineapple which is not unusual for me - done it plenty of times before. I ate about 75% of it and my mouth started hurting and feeling raw and then the blood came... bleeding gums and tongue. Quite shocking frankly and not just a dab of blood, I spit (spat?) out quite a bit of red. So the pineapple got it's revenge. Why would this happen, especially since it has never happened before? Even if it wasn't quite ripe enough... Is it because my body isn't alkaline enough to combat the acids in the pineapple? And if it hurts my gums and teeth so much is it also destroying my tooth enamel? Should I take pineapple off the menu? My menu is quite short as it is...
