Re: How much water does one drink?

Hi MaRie :),

re: "Boooooo. I broke my fast 49 hours into it with some homemade veggie soup my neighbor brought me."

I think it's awesome that you went 49 hours. Congratulations! And you broke the fast with veggie soup. How sensible :o).

re: "I was feeling very great thinking i could do this forever when BAM... i was hit with some toxic feeling tiredness and weakness and that made me very anxious. "I tried easing it by drinking a lot of water and taking a nap with my Siamese but to no avail. It just got worse and felt like it would only get worse. I watched my once happy self completely slip away. Then my mind started to think, "Oh my, how many more days of this. I can't keep doing this."

Well, nobody could say you didn't try. And let us not forget that you fought a lot of temptation to make it to 49 hours which i really see as a great accomplishment. In spite of all this, it seems in the end that it was ultimately the anxiety that led you to break your fast.

In a fast, it would be very helpful to you if you would anticipate and thus be prepared in every way (emotionally, mentally, etc.) for such things as hunger and/or... a toxic feeling, tiredness, weakness, absense of energy, foggy mindedness, sadness, heartburn, or a number of other minor unpleasantries. Accepting that these symptoms may occur, knowing they are temporary, and just relaxing in them, allowing them to be there, embracing the fast and surrendering to the process, knowing that whatever you go through will be abundantly worth it for the benefits you will derive.

Knowing to anticipate any or all of these symptoms should serve as a valuable tool in preventing the onset of anxiety...

Then if anxiety should arise anyway, i believe you need to find ways to calm yourself. Sitting quietly before God just listening is one such way. Reading scripture could be another. Soothing deep breaths another. Warm bubble bath perhaps. And walking can be very useful too. Another idea, for me as well, would be to think about the people on this site who have been through far worse (vomiting several days as one example) and it didn't kill them. They endured it and kept going.

I also believe... in the same way that your first fast of 24 hours strengthened you in many ways to go further this time... that the fact you made it 49 hours in this fast will give you more comfort and confidence in going further yet in your next.

re: "I now see I should have done like you said, give yourself an out but in a few hours and if you're stilling feeling hours hunger hours later then eat. Now with hindsight and less anxiety I see that would have been my best bet."

This is an example of "getting better at fasting with experience". You should be less anxious next time and more empowered.

re:" But I am going to try again. I have Wed-Sun off so might as well."

Your tenacity is amazing and inspirational.

re: "This time I'll turn more to God's strength in my weakness and not making food my savior in time of need."

A believer has this as a tremendous blessing and a fantastic source of strength. Definately great to lean on our God in a fast, allowing him to lend us a tiny sliver of his infinate strength.

re: "That's incredibly good that you chose to fantasize eating a small bite of fruit when cheating on your fast in a dream. That actually makes me laugh! Not too much guilt there :)"

haha... well. perhaps so. It is strange... i actually do all kinds of "resisting wrong" in my dreams. And in the case of the fruit, it was only because in the dream i didn't remember i was fasting :o).

re: "I on the other hand had chocolate cake all over my face in my dream much like my default photo. Go figure ;)"

haha, now that makes ME laugh :). In truth, i wouldn't beat yourself up over that... but on a deeper note, i believe it would help you a lot to consciously decide you want to break your fast in a healthy way... if you could come to a place in your wakeful state where you are craving breaking your fast with a grape or a bite of spinach salad, or fresh juiced pinapple, you might find these healthy cravings in your dreams as well.

I have run out of time and will respond to the rest of this post soon.

Great job!
