Re: Breaking 7 day fast.

Hi Rhyang,

I have read in multiple sources that it is ideal to break a Water Fast with a day of fresh juice for every 4 days of water. In your case that would mean about a 1.75 day fresh juice fast following your 7 days of water. Then you would break the water+juice fast with a day of fruits and vegetables (predominately raw preferably) with a day of this for every 4 days of water+juice, in your case about 2 days of fruits and vegetables. The idea being to gently reawaken your slumbering digestive system, giving it a chance to get back up to speed. Regarding the Fruits and vegetables phase, i believe this can be invaluable as the appatite can be so fierce the first couple of days you begin to eat solid foods again, limiting ourselves to fruits and vegetables only is a great safeguard against gorging way too soon on foods that are not simple enough for our bodies to optimally deal with just yet in the "still awakening" digestive system. Even if a person "over eats" the fruits and vegetables in this period of extraordinary appatite, little harm can be done, whereas eating 4 plates of prime rib would be a decidedly bad thing.

In the absense of a juicer i believe your instincts were good in biting into the fruit, chewing it for the juice and spitting out as much pulp as possible. In times where i was overwhelmed with desire to "bite into something" after a water fast, i have done just the same thing, though ideally ones cravings after the fast are far better tamed than were mine in that instance ;). Additionally, you can probably pick up a citrus juicer for about $3. I probably wouldn't start with something as sweet as orange juice, but certainly it's not the end of the world. If you were to be drinking juice following the water fast, it is highly recommended to dilute the juices with 50% or so water, most especially if they are sweet.

In any case, as crisb1 mentioned above, raw is so much better than processed. I have heard it said as well that it is great to break the "juice" portion of your fast with (raw) vegetables with high water content first, to get your body loving the taste of them (as opposed to something sweet which for many is so much easier to love without any encouragement). Some great ones i can think of are raw spinach, lettuce, onions, and bell peppers. I so look forward to these spinach/onion/bell pepper salads, likely as my first solid food after the juicing phase... even if it is 8am :p. These particular vegetables are nearly as "light" and easily digested as fruits. By contrast, broccoli, carrots, Celery would have to be considered a step deeper on the "ease of digesting" chart, but again still pretty light. And anything cooked becomes heavier yet and certainly harder for your body to digest and considerably less healthy.

On to the apple sauce issue, instead of jarred "dead" apple sauce, it would be so much better to blend up an apple with some water and get the benefit of the live enzymes among other advantages. There would have to be someone somewhere u can borrow a blender from and perhaps even a juicer.
