Re: Alkalizing Drink...
stomach acid is tenth normal HCl (0.1N)
Ingesting tiny amounts of calcium hydroxide as specified on the internet in "alkalizing drinks" is of little consequence, it is immediately neutralized by the stomach acid to form CaCl2, calcium chloride. And we're talking millimoles here. One common problem is that some people do not produce enough stomach acid, which is why they sell betaine HCl pills, for these people. If a person's stomach were HCl deficient, then adding pickling lime would only make it worse, since, the stomach acid is the body's first defense against many bacteria and even viruses. Canine's stomach acid is about 0.3N, which is why they can basically eat shit and not get sick from it.
I see pickling lime, taken in minute quantities, as being of no consequence to me any different than if I were to ingest calcium chloride, since that's what it is instantly converted to once it hits the stomach. If I were one of those low stomach acid people, I wouldn't touch the stuff.
Since the acid in the gut is the body's first line of defense against pathogens, one can only wonder what benefit there could be to weakening that defense by neutralizing it. I see none.
Keep in mind that placebo effect can be as high as about 40%, so merely believing that something is good for you, can go a long way.
Dr. Masaru Emodo has shown that water itself is affected by thoughts. If a person holds a glass of H2O in their hands and thinks good thoughts, like, I think this water is going to make me feel better, then the water becomes structured around those thoughts, and can actually help them. I view the pickling lime in these instances as being merely an inert actor present for the ride. Especially at the low concentrations specified.
It's all about intent. The procedure one chooses to employ when exercising intent, is up to their personal conscience.
