Re: Spiritual Fasting
You are right on with what you intend to do. I have read awesome testimonies of people who have had major breakthroughs with personal problems by fasting and prayer. This forum's major focus seems to be fasting for health or weight loss. I know that fasting is useful for other reasons as well. Fasting with prayer is like having atomic power with God for getting prayers answered even if it is not health related. Personal problems fall into that category. Fasting with prayer is taking the kingdom of God by force. You are violent in the kingdom of God when you fast and pray. The Bible says the violent take it by force. Fasting with prayer is drawing near to God and the Bible says that if you draw near to Him, He will draw near to you. These reasons are my personal reasons for wanting to learn to fast. I place them far above fasting for health and weight loss. Although I need that too, those reasons are not my primary reasons for wanting to learn to fast.
Some suggestions:
Pray as much as you can when you are fasting.
Read the Bible as much as you can when you are fasting and as you do pray. You probably already know that God speaks to you while you read it. It is so awesome. Of course, He may speak to you at other times too.
I don't know what your personal spiritual beliefs are, but we do know that there is truth and there is deception. The Bible has been so twisted by religious leaders. Reading the Bible for yourself will help wash your brain with the truth and help remove any brainwashing by religious leaders. I would strongly suggest that you make one of your major prayer requests, "God show me the truth and remove any deception that I may be under." I am not accusing you of being under deception as I don't even know you, however, I do know to some extent how deceived the world is and it is bad. I realize that I personally am not above deception and so I pray this prayer to my Heavenly Father for myself as well. I just wanted you to know that I am not thinking of myself as better.
Keep what you are doing as secret as possible, but don't get into bondage about the secrecy. God understands that you may need support and the Bible does tell us to encourage one another. "That thou appear not unto men to fast, but unto thy Father which is in secret: and thy Father, which seeth in secret, shall reward thee openly" Matthew 6:18 KJV. And, "But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly." Matthew 6:6 KJV. He will reward us with answered prayer.
I mention a couple of good books that I have read on fasting and prayer in this post:
