IUD embedded but not perforated?
I've had my Mirena for 4 years - no real problems except that I could feel it sometimes (certain sexual positions, riding a bicycle). I've checked the strings regularly and they're just where they should be.
I went to have it removed and she found the strings no problem, but when she pulled on them it wouldn't budge. It was extremely painful and my uterus was cramping for a while after she tried.
She sent me for an ultrasound, and then to a specialist (OB/GYN) who told me that the IUD is embedded but likely not perforated because the strings are still there. The way she explained it, the outer wall of the uterus is still intact (she thinks) but the lining has grown over the IUD.
I have to have a D&C guided by a scope in order to remove it. It will be under general anesthetic.
I'm very worried and upset, not to mention confused - my doctor just says "don't worry, it will be fine" but I think she's just saying that because she's the one who put it in and she doesn't want to admit that there could be problems.
We're ready to have children, which is why I wanted it taken out. Does anyone know what this will mean for my fertility?
