I have always read and felt that a Water Fast is safest and most effective when done while resting as much as possible. In fact I would use my vacations to fast and occasionally long weekends. The downside is that the length of my fasts were usually quite short since I live alone and must work for a living. I want to try a fast of at least ten and hopefully twenty one days before winter. However, I am doing a lengthy time of detoxing first. I am trying to wean myself off sugar, grains and animals products first, then go into a period of fruit and vegatable eating (using Joel Fuhrman's book "Eat To Live" as a guide) before I begin the fast. I do hope to have a few fasts lasting one or two days as well. However, if I find I cannot work and Water Fast then I will probably try a juice diet for awhile. I really do not consider juice "fasts" or Lemonade "fasts" to really be true fasting since the body is being both nourished and fueled. However, I do believe these gentler "fasts" have merit when Water Fasting is not an option for whatever reason.
