Re: Effects of Fasting on Mesntruation--Please help
No affect I can tell. Today is day two of my period and I'm on day three of my fast. :-)
Generally women stop menstruating when they are below a certain percentage of body fat. That's why anerexics and runners often have to be very careful. But for me, I don't have to worry, I have lots and lots of body fat to burn through.
Another thing to keep in mind is that you probably shouldn't do a fast right before or after you're trying to conceive - at least 3 days before and then after ovulation/unprotected sex etc until you know you're NOT pregnant.
WHY? Well, when you're fasting your body is burning the fuel stored in your body fat. When it does that, it releases a ton of toxins into your blood stream that were also held in that body fat - which you normally pee out. But if you have a minute fetus, that fetus is absorbing all those toxins - not a good thing at all. Studies have found that women who do not eat while they are pregnant have a higher percentage of retarded children. Fetuses need their moms to eat, and babies need their moms to eat too - similar things can happen through breast milk of fasting women.
I may be in a similar boat to you in that right now I'm fasting in the two months before we try to get pregnant. In October, when I'm trying to get pregnant, I'm not going to fast until I know I either am or not.
I'm fasting now partially to get my BMI down so that I have less of a chance of contracting pregnancy diebetes, if (God willing) I do get pregnant. As you probably know, heavier women have a much higher liklihood of contracting diebetes when pregnant than women who were thinner before getting pregnant.
