Olfactory flashbacks, connected to memory. Just like other memories enter the mind from time to time, so do memories of aromas. Just as Iodine makes one more alert in other ways, it apparently also wakes up these memories as well. It's akin to having a craving for food, where you momentarily "taste it". It's very subconscious and can be triggered by the mere thought of a person or event with which the aroma was connected.
