Re: weight gain during re-feeding

Hehe, hi Bella!

Yes, I can more or less control what I eat. I have an underlying knowledge of what's good and what's bad, so even when I am tempted I can always revert to the good stuff, especially after a fast. My biggest problem though is boredom, after an extended period of fasting. I mean for the last 200 days I have probably not eaten on about 80 or 90 of them.

Anyway the weight you are gaining is perfectly OK, in my view. Let your body do what it wants to do, just put good stuff into it that's all that matters. Remember, your body is now filling up the empty shelves again as it were, and as you have fasted to completion and were not at all overweight, there is only one way your weight is going to go and that's up. If you check your Body Mass Index here, you will see that at 110 pounds you were BMI 18.9, so you really were on the lower limits. Even at 115 your are below BMI 20, which is way below what most Western Europeans are. You do need a certain percentage of fat to allow your muscles to function properly.

I find that my body puts on up to 2 or 3 pounds a day after a fast, then suddenly it stops, maybe at 6 to 12 pounds more than my lowest recorded weight. I have said in previous posts that I can control this by effectively dieting after a fast, but as you probably don't have any leeway to play with I would just let your body find it's own level. My guess is you will be on the turning point very soon, and you will soon find that you don't put any more weight on. Either way, you are now filling up with healthy stuff, which is great news!

When my weight stops increasing, I find I feel much better and have lots of energy, and no matter what I eat (with my new healthy diet) I don't put any more on. I like to stay at this point for a while before fasting. My analogy is with rechargeable batteries, I like to trickle charge my body for a while after the main charge is complete. If you refresh my graph you will see I have now stabilised at 84.8 kg, and I really feel like riding my bike today as I feel like doing something physical - weather and time permitting.

So in summary I think you are doing perfectly well, in fact I would even say you have set a good example to others as to how it should be done. As you appear to have used up all your reserves you should put some weight on, but it will soon stop, believe me.

IDEA! Can you find a pharmacy or something that has a body composition scale that you can use in-store? Good ones will tell you your percentages of bone, fat, water and muscle. Now would be a good time to do that - and when your weight stabilises, just so you know what you can be when you are fit and healthy. Not sure where you are but in the UK Boots the Chemist have them for customers, it costs 70p (just over 1 USD) to use it. In fact I have just ordered one online to be delivered, but it will be a few weeks before it arrives, so can't report on that yet for me, though I was about 30% fat on the store based scale a few weeks ago (still far too much - I am jealous of you! ;-)

Well done again Bella... :-)
