Re: 2 week (or more) water fast. and hi, im new!

a very very good book that i highly recommend is "The Fasting Path: The Way to Spiritual, Physical, and Emotional Enlightenment", by Stephen Harrod Buhner. this book has helped me immensely!

i think it would be highly beneficial to read before a lengthy fast because it really prepares you for the ALL aspects of fasting. yes, fasting is a terrific tool for weight loss, but many people are not quite aware of the emotions they will experience during a fast due to the sudden absence of food. this book really helps you figure out how to deal with what comes up for you. fasting forces you to take an up-close and personal look at your relationship with food, and sometimes it's really scary! the author of this book claims that unless you take these important steps, you are doomed to repeat your past mistakes with food, and will end up right back where you started.

it may be helpful to look at food and exercise as a pendulum... if you swing the pendulum too far one way (obsessive exercise, dieting, binge eating) then it is bound to swing just as far the other way. in my opinion, the greatest place to be is gently swaying in a place of moderation.

i came up with this analogy myself when i was living an "all-or-nothing" type lifestyle... i'd go for a few weeks being super, super healthy, doing over-the-top amounts of exercise, setting totally unrealistic goals for myself, and then i'd screw up, inevitably not reach my goal, feel bad, spend the next few weeks being lethargic and eating only junk food. i'd think, "well, i blew today, so i might as well blow the whole week".

it's taken me a long, long time (and lots of swinging back and forth) to gradually incorporate a healthy lifestyle that comes fairly naturally now. i wish it hadn't taken so long, but for me, gradual has been 100% more effective than trying to uphold an impossible number of changes all at once.

this is all just my opinion of course, and maybe some people CAN turn their lives completely around in a very short amount of time and maintain it for the rest of their lives and that's awesome for them! i just thought you might like to hear my personal story since you were so honest with yours :)

p.s. that is wonderful that you have such a loving and supportive fiance! he sounds like he loves you no matter what. the book i mentioned talks about making sure you are fasting for you and you alone, because you love YOURSELF, and want to give the gift of health to yourself, not because you want to punish yourself for being overweight through deprivation or because you think being thin will make you more loveable. you should know that your fiance will love you through "thick" or "thin"... no matter how long it takes you to go from "thick" to "thin" :)
