Yeah, there are many, many, many dr's who recommend Mirena FOR breastfeeding moms. Mine did as well. He knew I was breastfeeding exclusively and said it was safe because the hormones do not go into the bloodstream. Obviously that is not true, but this is what many dr's are telling their patients. The Mirena information also has it listed that it is safe for breastfeeding moms. I do know that my friend has an obstetrician that will not prescribe BC for nursing moms, but her dr also doesn't prescribe BC PERIOD. But, she's a naturopathic dr as well. I'm wondering if your husband is too. I have to say, I would have to agree with your husband's assessment that BC is not safe for nursing mothers, but not many dr's will take that stance.
