It is true that a patent doesn't last forever. The standard time is 20 years and you can make your patent last longer by making tiny changes. If you add changes onto someone else's patent, though, unless you have an agreement with the original patent holder, you can't use the stuff that was covered by the patent in the first place.

and yes, it's geared to kids but has the basics.
