Hello there- +90% of the citric acid now comes from China-they have "cornered the market" by selling it at prices below the manufacturing costs for other countries..
[Just like they did with garlic- +95% of it now comes from China-no more from Turkeministan,US,Canada,Philippines,Turkey,Iran,Japan,Spain,etc even organic garlic comes from China to a degree.
Unless you want to try to find it and at premium prices,thus..etc..Garlic in China is grown own foil where human "shit" and sewage from cities are used as fertilizers;they also spray it with different chemicals to prevent it from germinating,also re-sprayed aa to give the bulb its whiteness,etc and it can even be irradiated when it comes into the US....
This is how foodstuff is made in China..;add to this next to all the vitamin ingredients,greenfood like spirulina,honey,gingseng,etc..
So much now that many Chinese companies are stating that their products(herbs,etc,,)are produced in Canada,US with nothing being imported from China-you will find more and more of these good in your local Chinatown neighbourhood .Many are also importing from Vietnam,Taiwan,Thailand,Malaysia,etc..}
As a rule food from China and elsewhere is seldom checked up in Canada/USA on account to the new Trade rules-it is assumed it was properly do in their country of origin..]
Now for citric acid -it no longer co from citrus,limes etc..it is manufactured from from cultures of Aspergillus niger which are fed on a sucrose or glucose medium to produce citric acid .
The source of Sugar is corn steep liquor,molasses,hydrolyzed corn starch or other inexpensive sugarly solutions.
After the mold is filtered out,the resulting solution,citric acid is isolated by precipitating it with lime(calcium hydroxide)[I think that in China they use limestone]to yield calcium citrate salt,from which citric acid is regenerated by treatment with sulfuric acid..
