Re: first long water fast, some queitions???

The time frame for ketones to begin to be produced I think is 18-26 hours after the last meal. It really depends on how much you ate at the last meal and how much fuel you use up after it. The body will start creating ketones as soon as the last sugars in the blood and in the liver are consumed. From there it will probably take as long to change over to full ketosis where the body is providing full nutrition and energy for itself from it's stores. This is where the three day time frame comes from. There is very little chance this won't happen, I've not heard of any cases, it is a natural physical process. You can get urine test sticks which measure your ketones if you want to monitor your progress. I've used them and watched the increase in ketone production myself several times over the course of the second day.

Blood pressure usually lowers while fasting but as long as you stay aware of this and don't panic about it you should be fine. I have done a thirty day fast before and felt dizzy pretty much the whole way through it. More so when standing up quickly or something like that. I rode a motorbike to work most days right up until the end of that fast quie safely. I recently started doing mat work in karate again after many years, and after a couple of days of fasting. The first 5 minutes of rolling over made me very dizzy and I felt faint but my body soon adjusted again. Your body adjusts fine during fasting also, just take extra care. If you're out and feel more dizzy than usual just sit down and wait for the feeling to pass.

You can't really lose too much weight. You will use up all your stores if you fast to completion, or until you are hungry again. Then you will need to put some weight back on, this is done quickly and easily when you refeed according to hunger afterwards. Your body will let you know by the return of real hunger before you lose too much weight.

Your goals are all good ones and sound very achievable. I wish you the best of luck with your fasting. :)

Andrew.
