I think that you are right; an excess being true with anything...

It is interesting that some rather good sources/websites note magnesium as an Iodine antagonist such as
http://www.acu-cell.com,
yet it is suggested in the protocol as a synergist; most likely due to the synergistic action of C, Iodine and magnesium... the idea that it is helpful is most likely noted due to most people being deficient in magnesium... not many eat their green vegetables these days. Too much magnesium though, and perhaps we have another issue altogether.

Same thing is most likely true with any other alkaline mineral... Alkaline minerals will bind with halides... under the right conditions including availability of given minerals/elements.

calcium fluoride, bromide, chloride, iodide
magnesium fluoride, bromide, chloride, iodide,
potassium fluoride, bromide, chloride, iodide
Silver fluoride, bromide, chloride, iodide
Aluminum fluoride, bromide, chloride, iodide
etc.

The alkaline/acid thing...
