I had Mirena put in August 2005, and had very little side effects at first.  The only thing I experienced  was severe acne, which I had never had a problem with in the past.  I hadn't gotten more than an occasional pimple from time to time including my teens. In March of 2007 I started to experience pregnancy-like symptoms, and I too, took test after test with negative results.  I had swollen tender breasts, nausea, fatigue, and weight gain of 17 pounds in under two months. It turns out I had developed a bacterial infection that caused an ovarian cyst.  The cyst was causing my body to produce the symptoms, but my doctor could not explain the dramatic weight change (110 lbs to 127) and was very unsympathetic to my symptoms.  She actually looked at my chart from the last time I had been to that clinic in 1998, before I switched health insurance, and stated, well in '98 you weighed 119 so I have to go with that number instead of the 110 lbs that you "think" you weighed.  My last office visit in 1998 was a post pregnancy follow up, I had given birth a few weeks before that!   The IUD made it impossible for the infection to heal, so after 5 months of various medications, I had it removed.  The infection went away in about three weeks, and I switched doctors.  My weight is around 116 now but I have a small amount fat around my stomach that was never present before, and wont go away.  My weight had always been carried on my thighs, with my waist being disproportionately small.  I didn't have periods on Mirena, and since the removal 6 months ago, I have still had no periods whatsoever.  Since the removal, I develop migraines 3 to 4 times a week, and have tried the mini pill and Yaz which seemed to make them worse.  I am currently using spermicide for birth control.
