If you are sleeping on your side, it's possible that you are sleeping ON (putting pressure on) your ear. Because of the difference in AIR pressure in both ears, your ears not just sense the sound vibrations in the air, but also provide you with a sense of balance. It might be possible that the vagus nerve (begins in the brain and goes down to the stomach region) might be effecting the intestine and peristalsis (the vagus nerve can become entangled around the top of the stomach and cause acid reflux).
