Re: Pickling Lime - another downside - FLUORIDE content :(

Some seawater aquarium owners have found that calcium chloride is best for them... at one ounce per day in a 50 gallon aquarium, lime water would raise calcium content of the tank just 1 ppm. Not much at all... and not what they are after. They want a higher calcium content without the risk of increasing the pH levels too much as the lime water may.

Here is a Google that will show that calcium hydroxide is used in the desalination of salt water...

Google

In 1952 studies were done on the halide content of Washington apples, cherries and prunes (plums) where the fluoride content AVERAGED 194, 185, and 245 ppm respectively. From closest to farthest away from pollution sources, fluoride content ranged in the fruit from a high of 545 ppm to a low of 44 ppm.

BTW, fluoride content is true for all fruits and vegetables varying in ppm highest to lowest, from closest to farthest from their pollution sources.  These are fruit "trees" too...  Levels can be much higher in seasonally planted and harvested foods; especially in conventionally grown foods.  We have discussed root systems before.

I did not want to post current studies of fluoride content in foods as some of them would "frighten" people away from eating and drinking altogether. Obviously, processing foods increases the fluoride content ppm as well.  The fluoride levels in food can vary and do, even in organic, the fluoride levels are now much higher in most foods than the low of 44ppm listed in the 1952 study... this would make very good sense considering that pesticides, herbicides, and a plethora of other chemicals have been in widespread use for the 56 years following the study.

Alcoa has had a presence in Washington state for a while... which most likely skewed the results higher than they would of been in a state without Alcoa, however the use of conventional farming practices, in addition to a spreading out of polluting industries and people (polluting with their cars, electric use, etc.) across most states have kindly spread the wealth.

I could list soil values and agricultural studies that show soils poor in calcium, show higher (sometimes much higher) rates of fluoride present... I could also show where the increased fluoride levels in calcium depleted soils disrupts the calcium metabolism in the plants grown in these soils and thus increases fluoride content in these plants... and also among other things, heavy metals.

I could list studies and content of heavy metals in these foods as well, but I will leave you to check for yourselves; I have hopefully opened the door a bit more... inspired one or more to research some.

Given that organic fields only need a few years free from pesticide\herbicide use to be declared organic... and many of these so called organic fields were previously conventional farming fields... you get the picture. DQ has written exceptional posts on the half life of these chemical substances before; in the NEWS forum I believe.
