parasites are one cause.

Toxins are another.

Improper nutrition is another.

As I recall, Clark mentions some toxins as a problem because they allow parasites to get to places they wouldn't ordinarily be able to reach, and to be able to complete their growth cycles entirely within humans, rather than needing to find a different host (I recall a snail in one case) in order to mature and reproduce.
