Re: Food after liver flush. Experts please advise

There have been many studies on how our diets effect the formation of gallstones. It has been found that bile becomes more saturated on a diet of refined carbohydrates of Sugar and white flour rather than an unrefined diet of whole wheat and grains. Fighting Gallstones is trying to maintain a balance in the bile chemicals. A standard modern diet encourages more cholesterol to be produced than bile salts and the bile no longer remains liquid; Gallstones form.

Crisp fruits and vegetables are able to counter the formation of gallstones. Pectin found in apples has a greater effect in stopping gallstone and reducing cholesterol. It has also been discovered that apples can dissolve immature cholesterol gallstones. Another dietary factor found to lower cholesterol levels in the gallbladder is wheat bran. It appears that bile cholesterol attaches itself to the fibre in pectin and wheat bran and is expelled with our faeces helping to provide good supply of fresh bile.

In a study published in the British Medical Journal, it was shown that vegetarian women had a much lower incidence of Gallstones than non-vegetarian women. Of the 632 non-vegetarians, overall occurrence of gallstones was 25%. Vegetarians had only half as many problems, with only 12% being found to have gallstones. This is a difficult subject to broach and I don’t want to open up a discussion on the pros and cons of vegetarianism, but studies indicate that changing the proportions of vegetable and animal proteins can have a marked effect.

Too much meat protein increases cholesterol in the bile fluid and the percentage of bile acids decreases. This alters the way in which our digestive system works. A diet containing some vegetable protein makes the bile more balanced and has the ability to dissolve immature cholesterol gallstones. It is matter of balance and unfortunately our modern eating habits have made it an imbalance. Most of the studies have been done using Soya beans.

Fat-free and low-fat diets can be a cause for gallbladder problems as well as too much of the wrong fats. The body needs fats but you don’t need to take your fat intake purely from animal meat products.

In summary, eat unrefined whole grains, increase vegetable protein over meat protein, and consume foods containing pectin (especially apples) and foods containing cellulose such as radish, raw beets, Celery and crisp fruits.

Look carefully at your lifestyle habits and eliminate as many chemical sources as possible that may compromise proper liver function. This may include chemicals in the home or job such as solvents, gasoline, paints, fingernail polish, hair sprays, facial cosmetic products, vinyl products, pesticides, artificial food additives (a very important factor) such as artificial colours, artificial flavours and preservative chemicals such as sodium benzoate and others. In other words, begin eating natural based foods, rather than foods containing petroleum based products used to enhance flavours and shelf life.

The answer is to read and research and become your own expert. Many books and articles are written from a single perspective. They bolster some evidence and neglect conflicting information, they are not good articles.
